Fiery protest: BJP activists burning the effigies of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister in Karimnagar town on Friday. MAHABUBNAGAR: Telugu Desam Party deputy leader in State Assembly N. Janardhan Reddy has alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy is more interested in protecting the interests of Maharashtra than that of north Telangana farmers with regard to the Babli project. Speaking to media persons here on Friday, he said that the Congress government had miserably failed in preventing the Maharashtra government from constructing over 12 irrigation projects across the Godavari which would affect over 18 lakh acres of ayacut spread over six districts under Sriram Sagar project (SRSP). Compensation paidDr. N. Janardhan Reddy said the Babli project was being constructed in the area for which Andhra Pradesh had already paid compensation as the entire 55 sq.km area would get submerged in the backwaters of SRSP. By bringing this fact to the notice of the Supreme Court, the Andhra Pradesh government could stop the Maharashtra government from going ahead with the construction of Babli and other projects.” Refuting the charges of Congress leaders that Telugu Desam government had failed in preventing the Karnataka government from constructing Alamatti dam, he said that the height of the Alamatti dam was reduced from 524 metres to 519 metres because of the relentless efforts of Nara Chandrababu Naidu government. Supreme Court adviceThe TDP leader said even though the Supreme Court had advised the government to look for a political solution to the Babli dispute, the Congress government in the State was not putting in any effort in that direction though the same party was in power Maharashtra and at the centre. Karimnagar Staff Reporter writes: The BJP Karimnagar district unit leaders set fire to the effigies of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister in Karimnagar protesting against the failure of the governments to stop the Babli and other projects by Maharashtra. Earlier, the BJP leaders staged a dharna in front of the collectorate appealing to all political parties to participate in the debate on separate Telangana in Parliament on December 16.
