NEW DELHI: Opposition members from Andhra Pradesh on Friday sought the Centre’s intervention in putting a stop to the construction of the Babhli project by Maharashtra on the Godavari river. The matter was raised by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Communist Party of India in both Houses of Parliament and the Lok Sabha saw a walkout by the members when there was no response from the government. Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha after Question Hour, TDP member K. Yerrannaidu said the project was being pursued by Maharashtra without clearance from the Central Water Commission. With support from S. Sudhakar Reddy (CPI), the TDP member pointed out that the construction work would adversely affect the flow of water in the Sriramsagar dam in Andhra Pradesh. This would, in turn, create water shortage in seven districts of North Telangana. Earlier, the TDP members had tried to raise the issue at the start of proceedings itself but had to hold their fire till after Question Hour as Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal refused to permit them. Though they were allowed to raise the matter after Question Hour, the members were agitated as no response was forthcoming from the government. The issue also figured in the Rajya Sabha with TDP member M. V. Mysoora Reddy raising a special mention seeking immediate stoppage of the construction of 12 barrages on Godavari.
