13 candidates in the fray for the bypoll Canvassing ends on Saturday evening KARIMNAGAR: Campaigning for the Legislative Council byelections of the Karimnagar graduates constituency comprising Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad and Medak districts reached its peak in Karimnagar district on Friday. There are 13 candidates in the fray, prominent among them being Naradasu Laxman Rao (TRS), BJP candidate P. Venkat Narayan Reddy (BJP), Congress supported candidate Akarapu Bhaskar Reddy, UTF candidate Kamala Kumari, who is supported by the TDP and the Left and independents L. Srinath and B. Madhusudhan Reddy. The TRS had named its candidate even before the bypoll notification and had intensified its campaign with TRS district president and MLA Etala Rajender and other MLAs taking part. TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s son and State general secretary K. Rama Rao is also campaigning. BJP State president Bandaru Dattatreya and other senior party leaders including Bangaru Laxman, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, Dharma Reddy and Bal Reddy are campaigning for the party candidate P. Venkat Narayan Reddy. The BJP and the TRS seem to be solely banking on the Telangana ‘sentiment’. On the other hand, Ministers T. Jeevan Reddy and J. Ratnakara Rao, DCC president and government whip D. Sridhar Babu, ZP chairman A. Mohan, Markfed chairman Ponnam Prabhakar campaigned for the Congress-backed candidate Akarapu Bhaskar Reddy. Leaders of the TDP and the Left campaigned for Kamala Kumari of the UTF. MLCs Chukka Ramaiah and K. Nageshwar also campaigned for her. Dinner meetingsWith the campaigning scheduled to end on Saturday evening, the contestants intensified their last minute electioneering. TRS candidate Laxman Rao conducted a meeting with the graduates and hosted a dinner in town. The Congress too hosted a meeting-cum-dinner for the graduate votes. Local corporator Ahmed Hussain took the initiative to conduct the meeting under the minorities’ welfare association to support the Congress candidate.
