GUNTUR: A post-graduate nursing student of Government General Hospital Sheik Rehana died on the spot when an irresponsible leaseholder of a granite rock mine blasted at Lam village close to Guntur-Amaravathi main road on Friday afternoon.
A large chunk of the rock came and hit three girls sitting inside the van of GGH returning from Tadikonda village after completing a day-long health check-up camp. While Rehana died immediately after the incident, the other two girls were injured and being treated in the GGH here.
Stopping traffic on both sides of the blast site by the leaseholder was the norm, which was violated and blast carried out, the Guntur Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha said and promised immediate action on the culprits. Nursing students picketed the District Collector’s Office and Superintendent of Police’s office in the afternoon seeking Rs.5 lakh ex-gratia.
