This Day That Age
Inaugurating a symposium on the Prospect of Democracy in Asian countries under the auspices of the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies in New Delhi on December 12, Prime Minister Nehru said that the essence of democracy lay in freedom of thought, freedom to discuss, giving an opportunity for the opposite view to be expressed fully, and taking a chance of the right view prevailing ultimately. In a thought-provoking address, Mr. Nehru dealt with the content of democracy and its various forms and pointed out that the basic conflict was between the freedom of the individual to develop fully and more centralisation and ordered limitations on his freedom. While the dignity of the individual should be assured and opportunity for the growth of the individual should be provided, care should also be taken at the same time to see that political or economic institutions did not give unlimited power to the individuals or groups.
