Heavy losses for LTTE: Colombo

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s military on Saturday claimed that at least 27 LTTE cadre were killed at Terumurikandy as troops advanced along the Wanni battlefront amid LTTE resistance.

The Defence Ministry said the LTTE had declared “baffled casualty reports” through its media proxies to sustain the diminishing morale and support of its overseas supporters.

It said the troops, operating south of Adampan, Puthumurrippukulam and west of Iranamadu, had caused “serious damages” to the LTTE.

The Pro-LTTE website TamilNet claimed the two-pronged Army offensive on Kilinochchi was pushed back on Wednesday after fighting in Puthumurippu, west of Kilinochchi, and Ariviyal Nakar.

Separately, the EU has decided to give 16 developing countries, including Sri Lanka, duty-free access to EU markets under a special incentive arrangement for “sustainable development and good governance.”

A EU statement said the concession in respect of El Salvador and Sri Lanka would be subject to outcome of an investigation on whether the two countries are effectively implementing U.N. and ILO conventions on human rights and other related issues.
