COLOMBO: The Air Force on Saturday claimed to have launched a “string of air strikes targeting LTTE battlefield fortifications” south of Kilinochchi and west of Paranthan. Air Force spokesperson Janaka Nanayakkara said six missions had been completed and these attacks were being carried out to support the Army’s 57 Division and Task Force 1. The military said soldiers were approaching Kilinochchi from the west and south. “The town has been treated with a great symbolic importance by the terrorists who had their administrative hub until recently. Heavy clashes prevailed in the area during last couple of days as the terrorists gave heavy resistance to the soldiers marching in,” it said. The Defence Ministry said the troops, after successfully clearing LTTE from the Naganchola forest reserve, were now entering Mullathivu’s suburbs. “Daylong offensives were carried out by the 3 Brigades of the Division, closing in on the LTTE’s main military bastion in Mullathivu, taking three different approaches,” it said.
