KOLKATA: Even as it expressed doubts about maintaining buoyancy in exports in 2008, in view of the global financial crisis, the Indian Tea Association (ITA), the apex industry association, cautioned against imports of inferior or substandard teas. Pointing out that imports of tea into India were basically export-led, the ITA in a status paper released recently projected increased exports of 200 million kg with matching rise in imports of 20 million kg. This compared with the 178.75 million kg of export during 2007 (against 219 million kg in 2006) and imports of 16 million kg (24 million kg). The ITA said that the 100 per cent rate of import duty on tea should be maintained to check the influx of cheap teas and to safeguard the domestic industry.
