‘Involve local people to solve traffic problems’

Staff Reporter

Police official moots traffic engineering wing to coordinate with the traffic police

HYDERABAD: Additional Commissioner of Police N.V. Surendra Babu has underscored the need for trying out localised solutions to solve traffic problems in the twin cities, with the help of local people. In any locality, residents have a better idea of the local problems and they would be in a better position to suggest solutions and bring them to the notice of authorities, Mr. Babu said

At the ‘UMO: Bad Design Expo’08’, an exhibition of flawed designs, in State Gallery of Fine Arts, he mooted the idea of forming a traffic engineering wing in Hyderabad to coordinate with traffic police over issues like construction of road dividers, footpaths, zebra crossings and other civil works.

He said traffic police had toned down the number of challans issued daily on offenders in the twin cities as awareness was lacking among people. “We are issuing fines only for relatively bigger violations that endanger lives of others or oneself,” he said.

Staff shortage

Expressing limitations of his men as ‘they too are human beings’, he explained the intricacies of a police job to the gathering. It is easy for outsiders comment about the department’s improper functioning but the complexity of the job and the practical issues that go with it can be realised only when one works in the department, he said.

Usablity.org would engage with the traffic department by coming up with solutions rather than confining themselves to just pointing out violations committed, Mr. Babu said.
