Pigs pose a health hazard

The nuisance of pigs is growing by the day in Kavali. The problem is acute in north Janatapet, where the pig population is increasing. Besides causing environmental pollution and spreading diseases, pigs are also obstructing vehicular movement in the area. As many residents of this area eke out a livelihood by rearing pigs, it is very difficult for the residents of the surrounding areas to convince them about the problem.

The civic authorities are not taking any steps to control the menace.

The authorities are requested to consider the consequences of the problem and take steps to protect public health.

Level-crossings turn death traps

Of late, ghastly accidents are being reported quite often, mainly at the unmanned railway level-crossings. These are either causing heavy causalities or subjecting people to grievous injuries. In the latest incident, a school van was involved and a student was seriously injured.

Every year, crores of rupees are being spent on passenger amenities and comforts, totally neglecting passenger safety by the Indian Railways.

Any further delay in this regard would certainly result in more and more accidents at the unmanned level-crossings.

ACB deserves praise

Everyone have to appreciate the services of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in the State, which booked 443 cases and seized disproportionate assets worth Rs. 60.32 crores. We must admit that the officials of the ACB succeeded in creating panic among corrupt employees. The State Government must make it mandatory not to give posting orders to the employees who are found involved in corrupt practices till the closure of the cases. It should also take steps to display notice boards in government offices advising people not to offer bribes.

None can beat LIC

It is being reported that the Central Government is contemplating enhancing foreign direct investment (FDI) in the life insurance sector from the existing 26 per cent to 49 per cent. The government claims that the decision helps attract more FDI and sophisticated technology. But, the government seems to have forgotten the fact that foreign investors are keen on grabbing handsome profits, due to which insurance companies will have to switch over to commercial activities from the existing service-oriented activities. The government must take note of the development that so many national and international rating agencies recognised the Life Insurance Corporation of India as the best technology using company.
