Kudos to EcoR

Let’s appreciate the East Coast Railway disaster management team, which restored the Palasa-Sompeta railway track in minimum time after the Ernakulam-Patna express train accident. It was commendable performance by the team, which cleared eight bogies from the track by using all applicable methods like cranes, hydraulic jacks, gas cutters etc. A mobile hospital was also kept at the site of the accident. Not only disaster management but also maintenance procedures have to be improved in track, rolling stock and locomotives in respect of safety.

Relocate statue

The installation of the statue of late Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in Visakhapatnam city is laudable but it should have been located at a more suitable location. The roads on either side of the statue should be adequately widened forthwith and a wide traffic island with ample of greenery would increase the ambience around the statue. The nation owes its gratitude to the late Prime Minister who stood like a colossus and changed the economic status for the better and that too when it was at its lowest ebb, and gold had to be physically flown out of the nation to be pledged to the foreign banks. The entire nation and not just the state of Andhra Pradesh should think of various other means (not just installing statues) to sustain his memory for the benefit of all future generations to come, to send a clear message that perseverance, planning and patience does pay at the appropriate time.

Shift garbage yard

It is observed that garbage collected from various places in Srikakulam town is dumped beside the main road near flyover bridge leading to Amadalavalasa, Palakonda and other towns, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and others travelling by vehicles due to the stench emanated from the dump yard.

It is very hazardous to health and I appeal to the authorities concerned to shift the dumping yard to some other place.

Reduce autorickshaw fare

The autorickshaw travellers are happy that the Government has reduced the rates of petrol and diesel by Rs.5 and Rs.2 respectively. But the auto drivers have not reduced the fare commensurately and are demanding more. Peda Jalaripeta is a big slum where about 10,000 fishermen live. Autorickshaws take fishermen from Peda Jalaripeta to Fishing Harbour from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. The fisherfolk are poor and the charges collected by auto drivers are unreasonable, particularly after the reduced rates.

It is unfair to charge more and exploit the fishermen and it should be insisted that the autorickshaws ply on meter. I appeal to the Collector, police and transport authorities to take the necessary steps to ensure that autorickshaws run only on meter.
