‘State giving priority to irrigation’

Rs. 32 cr spent on LI schemes in Guntur district

Some 54,000 acres provided irrigation water

AMARAVATHI (GUNTUR DT): Minister for Minor Irrigation Maganti Venkateswara Rao (Babu) on Sunday said the State Government was committed to welfare of farmers and would go to any extent to complete all the irrigation projects. Addressing a meeting at Dharanikota village in Amaravati mandal after inaugurating Dharanikota Sri Kodandarama Lift Irrigation scheme, which was built at a cost of Rs. 4 crore, he said the Congress Government had spent Rs.32 crore for construction of Lift Irrigation schemes to supply irrigation water to 54,000 acres in Guntur district.

The district has also the credit of receiving the highest allocations in the construction of LI schemes, he pointed out giving the credit to dogged perseverance to Ministers and M.L.As from the district. Transport Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana said the LI Scheme would greatly benefit farmers in Dharanikota and Lingampadu villages, who would get irrigation water for their lands, which were in tail-end areas.

He said the Congress Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy accorded priority to irrigation sector and been spending Rs.1 lakh crore for construction of irrigation projects under Jala Yagnam. In the Pedakurapadu Assembly constituency alone, the State Government had sanctioned 14 L.I schemes and reminded that the Chief Minister had laid foundation stone for 10 LI schemes during his previous visit to the district.

MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao MLA Dokka Manikya Vara Prasad, R.D.O S. Venkata Rao and Irrigation Development Corporation Executive Engineer Krishna Reddy and attended the event.
