TIRUCHI: The government has sanctioned 95 samathuvapurams across the State and 25 of them would be completed during the current year, Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin said here on Sunday.

The remaining samathuvapurams would be built in a phased manner and tenders were being called for them, he said speaking to reporters after inspecting the samathuvapuram coming up at Malligaipatti in Thazhampadi village panchayat near Marungapuri in the district.

The samathuvapuram would be different from the rest in terms of design and location as well, as it is located on the foothills of the Malligaimalai, about 60 km from here. The location did pose a challenge in laying the foundation for the houses.

Explosives could not be used to blast the huge boulders as there is a BSNL telecommunication tower in close vicinity. Earth-movers were used to clear the boulders.

Despite odds, the work on the construction of the 100 houses on the sprawling rocky base of 8.7 acres at an outlay of Rs. 2.11 crore was in full swing.

Each house has a plinth area of 265 sq.feet being constructed at an outlay of Rs. 1.75 lakh.

An overhead drinking water tank with a capacity of 30,000 litres has also been constructed. Work on laying distribution lines was under way. “It will be completed by next month, ahead of the schedule,” Mr.Stalin said.

Transport and Agriculture Minister K. N. Nehru, Forest Minister N. Selvaraj and Collector T. Soundaiah accompanied Mr.Stalin and briefed him about the project.
