NEW LEASE OF LIFE: Some of the transplanted trees near the construction site of the new Secretariat complex in Chennai.
CHENNAI: Fortyfive trees in the Omandurar Government Estate have been transplanted at a cost of Rs. 5 lakh on the estate to clear space for construction of the new Secretariat complex.
“Of the 87 trees that needed to be removed for the construction work, 42 were found unfit for transplantation. They will be removed later,” said a Public Works Department official. The Forest Department has asked for details of the trees unfit for transplantation from the PWD.
The official said that the transplanted trees included Neem, Peepal and Ashoka.
“During the process of transplantation, the branches of the trees were first pruned and a fungicide Carbandazim was applied. Hormone auxin was applied to the root zones after the trees were manually dug,” said an executive of Paradise Garden, the company engaged for the transplantation. The company used two cranes for the job.
The trenches with proper planting depth were three times bigger than the root ball size of the transplanted tree. The trenches were then filled with a mixture of red earth, manure and coir dust. Carbofuron granules were also applied.
