Of late, streetlights are being switched off by 5 a.m. This being winter season, sun rises late. With three-wheelers and two-wheelers plying without headlights, it looks as though we are heading for fatal road accidents. It is very desirable that the lights are switched off after sunrise. Bhavani Durga Old HB Colony Police are not law themselvesThe reaction of youth, especially students, to the alleged ‘encounter’ of the three accused in the acid attack on engineering students in Warangal appears to have been born out of emotion and anger rather than a mature understanding. It is unfortunate that the Warangal police have made it a ‘practice’ to resort to these kinds of encounters in sensational cases by taking undue advantage of people’s collective anger. If the police are allowed to hand over punishment in such cases on their own without waiting for the courts of law to conduct trial, Constitution and criminal justice system will lose their meaning. The youth must understand that the police are only a part of the law, but not law themselves. Ch. Praveena Moghalrajapuram Police action welcomeThe action of the Warangal police should be welcomed, as there is no guarantee that the three persons arrested for throwing acid on Swapnika and Praneetha would get stringent punishment in the court. They may, at the best, get a few years of rigorous imprisonment, which will definitely not be enough if one takes into consideration the trauma and suffering undergone by the girls and their families. If the action of the police is viewed in a broader perspective, one would understand that they have done the right thing by taking into account the people’s anger towards the culprits. Md. Basha Kothapet ‘Encounter’ not rightThe Warangal police have resorted to the ‘encounter’ of the three individuals who were arrested in connection with the acid attack on girl students only to cover up for their failure to act in time when the parents of one of the girls complained long back that Srinivasa Rao, the main accused, was harassing her. The police may have got praises from all those who were moved by the plight of the two girls, but they have definitely not done the right thing by handing over “instant punishment” to the accused. The police should, henceforth, ensure that any complaint of harassment of college-going girls is attended to without any delay, so that such ghastly crimes could be prevented. P.V.K. Sai Krishna Brodipet, Guntur
