Film: The Day the Earth Stood Still Cast: Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith, John Cleese Director: Scott Derrickson Before the screening of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” there was the trailer of maverick director Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia”. We watched entranced as a radiant Nicole Kidman sparred with sexy Hugh Jackman, against a glorious backdrop of golden sunshine, sweeping vistas, soaring music and a dramatically-stranded warship. However, we will have to wait for those delicious treats from the man who gave us “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge!” In the meantime we will have to watch tired remakes. So you have Keanu Reeves as alien Klaatu making smart sartorial choices — choosing a narrow blue suit after asking the size and mumbling imperturbably about humans being a plague that need to be wiped off the face of the earth. A remake of the 1951 Robert Wise sci-fi classic, “The Day the Earth Stood Still” has updated the nuclear holocaust paranoia for global warming. Klaatu comes to earth with his huge robot friend to tell the humans to clean up their act or else be wiped out. The special effects are rather tacky and the acting is horrendous. This film has nothing going for it from acting to plot to special effects. Might as well wait for Mr Luhrmann’s red curtain spectacular. MINI ANTHIKAD-CHHIBBER
