dated December 16, 1958: Elephant abducted

Kamala Devi, a she-elephant, employed by the Forest Department of West Bengal to carry visitors in the Jaldapara Game Sanctuary in Jalpaiguri, was “abducted” by a wild tusker and a “Makna” (tuskless he-elephant) recently. Forest officials recovered Kamala Devi from her abductors with great difficulty. Forest officials told a party of pressmen who toured the sanctuaries that their job demanded more than a casual training in personnel management because often they were called upon to solve delicate problems like love among animals under their care.
