Letters to the Editor
The article “Beyond the ‘no security, no taxes’ slogan” (Dec. 13) argues that the anger generated by the terrorist attack on Mumbai should not make our democracy weaker and fragile. I feel unbiased and true expressions of public sentiment will only strengthen democratic institutions, not weaken them. For democracy to evolve, we need to have a system of feedback from the people. The Naval Chief’s remarks about the media reflect the people’s opinion and cannot be termed as an emboldened statement which questions the performance of the electronic media. M. Bharathy, Puducherry The ‘no security, no taxes’ slogan is unrealistic, undesirable and unfortunate in the prevailing circumstances. The U.S. adopted an aggressive path after 9/11. What did it achieve? More terrorism and more deaths. Instead of indulging in rhetoric, let us create public opinion against terrorism for better governance, better intelligence, better training and equipment for the police. Venuturupally Suryam, Secunderabad The demonstration of public anger leads to a loss of faith in democratic institutions, which is what the terrorist wants. In crisis situations, we should repose faith in the instruments of state instead of criticising them. As citizens of the largest democracy, we must unite and strive for creating a strong and vibrant India. We must extend support to our political leaders, who are fighting against terror. Jagunatharaddi Jalaraddi, Gadag
