Dhampur Sugar Mills wins

Chennai: It was heartbreak for C.V. Rao’s Team in the four-day Tolani Grand Prix bridge tournament which concluded at Mumbai on Tuesday.

The team comprising of (Badal Das, Sumit Mukherjee, Pranab Bardhan and Bhabesh Saha) which led all through faltered at the very last stage and lost by a mere 5 IMPs (109-104) to Dhampur Sugar Mills (Ashok Goel, Kamal Mukherjee, Pritish Kushari, Debabrata Majumdar, V.M. Lal and R.G. Bhiwandkar).

In an exciting 64-board final, the lead changed several times and in the end, Dhampur Sugar Mills bagged the trophy and winner’s purse of Rs 1.5 lakhs.

Many of the fancied teams like Tolani Shipping, Formidables, Shree Cements, Texan Aces and others bit the dust early on in the above tournament.

The pairs event was won by K.R. Venkataraman of Chennai and Sunit Chokshi of Ahmedabad. The Indian Railway pair of Manas Mukherjee-Rana Roy finished second.

The winning team will now play in the Indian team selection trials along the National champions, Tolani Shipping and other qualifying teams in early 2009.
