Safety first: Governor N.D. Tiwari giving away a ‘distress alert transmitter’ to a fisherman in Kakinada on Tuesday. Kakinada: Governor N.D. Tiwari inaugurated the Golden Jubilee celebrations of State Institute of Fisheries Technology (SIFT) at Jagannaickpur here on Tuesday. On the occasion, he distributed ‘distress alert transmitters’ made by Indian Space Research Organisation to fishermen and declared open a retail fish outlet of A.P State Fishermen Cooperative Societies Federation on SIFT premises. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Tiwari said the SIFT has made immense contributions to the field of fisheries on which a huge section of the State population was dependent and called upon the scientists to innovate new technologies which could enhance the fisheries production. Besides, the fisher folks should be equipped with the necessary instruments and their welfare looked after well. Minister for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Mandali Buddha Prasad said the State Government under the stewardship of Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy had increased the fisheries budget from nearly Rs. 25 crore in 2004 to Rs. 100 crore plus. This showed the government’s dedication for the welfare of fishermen and women most of whom were still leading their lives dangerously on the high seas. Mr. Buddha Prasad has promised that the Government would help in revival of the boat building yard at Kakinada and to set up a diesel bunk to meet the requirements of the motorized fishing boats which exist in a substantial number here. Later, Governor Tiwari released the SIFT Golden Jubilee souvenir and the Fisheries Minister, Sea Safety Manual brought out by SIFT. Kakinada Mayor K. Saroja, MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna, Fisheries Commissioner Aravind Kumar, SIFT principal scientist Prakasa Rao and others participated .
