TIRUCHI: The bridge across the Cauvery on the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass road was closed again on Tuesday to expedite completion of work on the new bridge coming up as part of the four-lane highway. It will remain closed till December 31. The closure resulted in traffic snarls on the Tiruchi-Chennai highway near the Coleroon bridge check-post and within the city along Amma Mandapam Road and Chinthamani area, as vehicles were diverted. Several motorists, caught unawares about the traffic diversions, had to return after coming up to the bridge. Residents’ apprehensionResidents of Srirangam expressed apprehensions over the heavy congestion caused along Amma Mandapam Road/Thiruvanaikovil Trunk Road owing to the traffic diversions. With the Vaikunda Ekadasi festival just round the corner, the residents pointed out that there would be a heavy rush of devotees to the temple, which was already attracting hundreds of Iyyappa devotees. The vehicles transporting them are parked along Amma Mandapam Road. The police should take steps to regulate the traffic flow and the National Highways Authority of India should ensure that the new bridge is completed and opened for traffic without any further time delays, said a senior citizen.
