States seek Rs. 20,000 cr.

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The States on Tuesday sought Rs. 20,000 crore additional funds from the Centre to tide over the impact of the slowdown emerging in various industrial sectors in the wake of the global downturn. Alongside, they ruled out the ‘declared goods’ status for aviation turbine fuel (ATF) citing serious revenue implications.

“We have decided to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with a request for additional Rs. 20,000 crore of Plan grant from the Centre for all the States, to be used for infrastructure development, irrigation, construction of houses and social sectors,” VAT panel chairman Asim Dasgupta told journalists here. The global meltdown, Dr. Dasgupta said, had impacted various sectors such as real estate, iron and steel, cement and petrochemicals, affecting the tax revenue collection of the States.
