Nedumbassery: Owing to a re-fleeting process, the SriLankan Airlines has decided to suspend its services from 15th January to the end of the ongoing winter schedule to Kochi, which the airline termed as the one of the four less popular destinations. Currently, the airline is operating five services every week in the Colombo-Kochi route with a flight on every week day. A statement issued by the airline’s corporate affairs department on Tuesday informed that the airline was replacing four of its older narrow body aircraft with newer ones. Two new Airbus 320 aircraft had already arrived and would join the fleet later this month with the other two due within the next couple of months. Until then, the services to four of its less popular destinations—Kozhikode, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Cochin—would be suspended. Meanwhile, the airport officials did not confirm the suspension of service by the airline and said that they had not yet received any official intimation in this regard. They added that the security for the aircraft in the airport had been further strengthened on the basis of the reports of a hijack threat to the Sri Lankan aircraft by the LTTE. “Though no official confirmation has been available, we cannot take these reports lightly and hence the security for the aircraft have been tightened”, said A.C.K. Nair, airport director.
