The government’s move to set up a National Investigation Agency (December 17) — on the lines of the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the U.S. — calls for appreciation. Just as military cases are subjected to court martial, terrorism cases should be referred to a special court to be constituted by the agency. The NIA should also rope in officials from Interpol and intelligence agencies from other countries to whom the cases should be referred for investigation. K. Pradeep, Chennai The speed with which the two bills — one to set up a National Investigation Agency and the other to amend the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act — have been introduced in the Lok Sabha is heartening. It required an incident like the 26/11 Mumbai attacks for the government to realise the need for such a move. The BJP’s contention that no strong anti-terror laws accompany the NIA Bill is untenable since the existing laws and the proposed changes are strong enough, if implemented effectively. The NIA should be kept away from political interference and control to fulfil the purpose for which it is being created. B. Harish, Mangalore
