Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial “A futile exercise” (December 17). Notwithstanding the findings of the Kishore Chandra Deo Committee, the overwhelming public impression that some powerful elements in the ruling regime were accomplices in the flagrant ‘cash-for-votes’ scam cannot be erased easily. The ‘clean chit’ given to Amar Singh and others even before recommending for a full-scale investigation and without any hearing from the accused defies jurisprudential logic. While enormous provisions are laid for protecting the prerogatives of parliamentarians, it is paradoxical that there are few credible mechanisms to bring corrupt MPs to book. B. Jayanna Krupakar, Surathkal As long as the public perception that corrupt practices are part of the political system is not changed and the leaders believe they are privileged to be corrupt because of their election as public representatives, there are no chances of this malaise getting cleansed. Why not Legislators and Parliamentarians be governed by the conduct rules as applicable to government servants and all corruption charges levelled in or outside Houses be referred to courts of justice for verdict after investigation by the law enforcing agencies? M.A. Hakeem, Hyderabad The report of the committee set up to probe the incident has contradicting conclusions. The probe concluded without questioning the two Rajya Sabha members, who had a prominent role in the incident. Mahesh Kumar Singh, Katpadi
