Sentry’s alarm leaves police red-faced

HYDERABAD: A panic reaction by a sentry of Mellacheruvu police station around 1 a.m. on Wednesday led to firing by over a dozen policemen for about an hour and left the police top brass red-faced, leading to an inquiry into the incident.

There was no Maoist attack on the police station as stated in the preliminary reports, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K. Jana Reddy told reporters later. Mr. Reddy, who was also initially told that it was a Maoist attack, hailed the police personnel for repulsing the attack. However, after getting the full details, he said that whole incident was triggered by the shouts of a sentry that the police station was fired upon.
