DHAKA: Emergency rule in Bangladesh came to end on Wednesday ahead of the parliamentary election slated for December 29. President Iajuddin Ahmed signed an order to end the Emergency rule and Army chief General Moeen U. Ahmed said the military would support democracy. A Home Ministry statement said this move would allow political parties to campaign freely. Political activities, including holding of rallies and meetings, were banned after the Emergency was imposed in January 2007. Though the government eased restrictions and pulled back troops to the barracks, it refused to withdraw the Emergency. The caretaker government said it would deploy the Army from December 20 in the run-up to the election.
