‘Guava can be cultivated without much risk and the returns are assured’ SANGAREDDY: Agriculture Production Commissioner and Principal Secretary Dr. S. Challappa and Andhra Pradesh Horticulture University Vice-chancellor Dr S.D. Shikamany on Wednesday called upon the farmers to take up cultivation of guava as it was viable more commercially. Addressing a gathering of farmers at the Fruit Research Station (FRS) on the occasion of ‘Guava Day’ they said that guava can be cultivated without much risk and the returns are assured. They also explained about orchard management of guava, nursery propagation, how to plant and the distance between each plant, meadow orchard, high density orchard, water management, crop regulation and pest disease management. They also said that taking up the cultivation of this crop in new areas was viable and profitable. They recalled the experience of farmers Anantapur and Prakasham districts. Some of the farmers also gave an account of their experiences in guava cultivation. Zilla Parishad chairman M. Balaiah, State Horticulture Mission Executive Director H. Arun Kumar, DWMA project director Soni Bala Devi and others participated in the programme.
