A fusion of traditional crafts on display

Achievements of artisans from across country showcased



CREATIVE EXPRESSIONS: Some of the items on display at the exhibition organised by the Artisans Welfare Trust in Chennai.

CHENNAI: An arts and crafts expo organised by the Artisans Welfare Trust got under way at the Corporation Community Hall in Alwarpet here on Tuesday.

The event showcases the achievements of artisans from across India and the works display a fusion of traditional crafts with enduring innovation.

The exhibits range from heritage collection of textiles, handlooms, painting, gemstones, artificial jewellery, ceramics and cotton garments.

Several small-scale industrial units, cottage industries and craftsmen have put up a colourful display of miniature paintings, white wood showpieces, marble works, brass statues, floor coverings, handloom products and lac articles.

The products on display also include bangle patch work from Gujarat, khadi materials, cotton churidars from Kashmir, black metal collectibles from Hyderabad, temple jewellery, stone jewellery from Jaipur, terracotta and a big range of sheesam wood articles such as chairs and flowerpots.

Artistic work from Rajasthan, West Bengal and Haryana are a special attraction here.

According to a release from the Trust, the expo is aimed at facilitating direct interaction between connoisseurs of arts, exporters, distributors, retailers and potential buyers on one hand and the artisans on the other. The exhibition is on till December 25.
