Slain FCI official’s kin to move court

GUWAHATI: The family of the slain Food Corporation of India (FCI) executive, P.C. Ram who, the Assam government claimed, was killed in a crossfire between police and his abductors — militants of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) — has decided to move the Gauhati High Court seeking the status of the probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the death and also expediting the probe by the investigating agency.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on July 17 announced a CBI probe into Ram’s death as the incident snowballed into a controversy over the role of police and the FCI official’s family refusing to accept the police version and pressing for a CBI probe.

Ram’s son Praveen Kumar told reporters here that a visit to the residence of Gobinda Deka at Pachim Borka under the Kamalpur police station in lower Assam’s Kamrup district on Wednesday, where the official was killed on July 11, 2007, only firmed up his suspicion that his father died in police firing and not in crossfire.
