Pratibha Patil will unveil a silver jubilee commemorative pillar 2009 has been declared silver jubilee year VELLORE: President Pratibha Patil will inaugurate the year-long silver jubilee celebrations of VIT University at a function to be held on the university campus here on January 8. She will also inaugurate a ladies hostel constructed at a cost of Rs.18 crore and a Centre for Bio-Medical Research constructed at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. Giving this information to newspersons here on Friday, G. Viswanathan, VIT Chancellor, said that the President would also unveil a silver jubilee commemorative pillar, which would later be erected at the entrance to the university campus. Sekar Viswanathan, Pro-Chancellor, said that the year-long celebrations to be held during the calendar year 2009, declared as the silver jubilee year, would include the Silver Jubilee Alumni Meet (SJAM) on January 26. Alumni of the VIT University including alumni from Singapore, Dubai and Germany, as well as former Vice-Chancellors, former principals and former professors of the VIT University would be participating in the SJAM. The alumni would have an interaction with the former professors. The SJAM would include a photo exhibition on the history of VIT, guest lectures by alumni and experts on various topics, and entertainment programmes by alumni and the present students. G.V. Selvam, Pro-Chancellor of VIT University, said that Riviera, the annual cultural and sports event of the university, would be held from January 30 to February 2. The event would include a music programme by Vikas Sekhar, Hindi music director, and a rock show by Raghu Dikshit on January 30. Rumanian professionals would be conducting a laser show, fire works and aerobics, while another group would be conducting a fashion show on January 31. There would be a music programme by a south Indian orchestra and a fire show on February 1. A south Indian celebrity would be the chief guest at the valedictory function on February 2. VIT students would participate in a marathon from the Chittoor bus stand in Katpadi to the VIT football ground on the morning of January 30. Mr. Selvam said that the VIT University proposed to organise a permanent photo exhibition on the history of the university, which would be inaugurated at a later date. A book on the VIT University would also be released in connection with the silver jubilee celebrations at a later date. Mr. Viswanathan, who is also the president of the Voorhees College Alumni Association, said that Ms. Patil would also inaugurate the centenary block of Voorhees College, Vellore, on January 8, constructed by the alumni association at a cost of Rs.1.15 crore on the college campus. D. Daniel Ezhilarasu, Principal of Voorhees College, said that Ms. Patil would also inaugurate a two-day National Conference on Empowerment of Women and Youth, and inaugurate a Global Alumni Get-Together by releasing a souvenir at the Voorhees College the same day.
