dated December 20, 1958: Giant rocket engine

The United States is to develop a big new rocket engine capable of sending into space a manned satellite weighing several tons, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced on December 17.

The single-chamber engine will be designed and produced by Rocketdyne, a division of North American Aviation Inc. The U.S. Army is also working on a rocket engine with more than one million pounds thrust, but this will consist of a cluster of seven or eight Jupiter engines. The Army hopes to have it ready within a year.
