Cricket tour

The government’s decision to cancel the India-Pakistan cricket series, which was slated to begin next month in Pakistan, is in the right direction. Cricket is meant to build bridges between nations and ease tensions. But the terrorists operating against India from Pakistani soil with the alleged support of the ISI seek to destabilise the economy and create disharmony in our society. It would be imprudent to play cricket with such a bellicose country.

H.P. Murali,

Bangalore

It is naive to argue that cricket matches (or any tournament for that matter) between India and Pakistan can strengthen the ties between the two nations. On the contrary, political bonhomie must precede the conduct of sports.

S. Ramakrishnasayee,

Ranipet

India’s decision echoes the people’s sentiments. There is no doubt that sport is different from politics but given the security situation and Pakistan’s reactions after 26/11, the extreme step is inevitable.

Balasubramanian Ramakrishnan & Lavanya Balasubramanian,

NSW, Australia
