9 Kerala fishermen detained
Staff Reporter
Owner of the vessel faces charges of violating MFRA as he is plying without registration
Kakinada: Nine fishermen belonging to Kerala were detained by the marine police near the fishing harbour here on Friday.
They arrived in a boat purchased in Kerala by a person belonging to Kakinada but not registered with the authorities here as per law. The boat was seized by Fisheries Department officials and the fishermen were sent to the police station for interrogation.
NOC
According to official sources, the boat was brought from a village in Kerala close to Kanya Kumari (Tamil Nadu) in October this year and officials there issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) for getting it registered in Kakinada where it was supposed to be used. But, the purchaser, identified as Chinna, had been plying the vessel since then without registering it. This amounted to violating the Marine Fisheries Regulation Act (MFRA) wherein it is stipulated that every sea-going vessel has to be registered if it is sought to be used in a State other than that of its origin. Chinna was taken into custody and is likely to be charged with violating the MFRA.
