Water pumping into Dharmasagar tank begins

Gollapudi Srinivas Rao

The tank will soon supply water to irrigate 20,000 acres

Dharmasagar tank capacity enhanced from

0.75 tmcft to 1.5 tmcft

Water will be pumped for nine days till the tank is full, says Ponnala Lakshmaiah

DHARMASAGAR (WARANGAL DT): The long and arduous wait of thousands of farmers has come to an end with the State government finally fulfilling its promise, which some dismissed as too lofty and impracticable, of supplying water.

The two motors, which are part of the Godavari Lift Irrigation Scheme phase I, began pumping water into the Dharmasagar tank on Thursday night.

The capacity of the tank which was 0.75 tmcft has been enhanced to 1.5 tmcft as part of the project. Soon, the tank will be supplying water to irrigate 20,000 acres in the surrounding mandals.

Once full to the brim, the water will then be pumped into the Station Ghanpur tank to irrigate the land around the mandal. The water is likely to be supplied through canals to Wardhannapet mandal and beyond.

Water for rabi

Speaking to The Hindu, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said the water would be continuously pumped for about nine days till the Dharmasagar tank was full.

“The supply depends on the water level in the Godavari at the Gangaram pumping station. We will be supplying water to rabi crops to 20,000 acres of the new ayacut,” he explained.

Trial runs

After several trial runs, the officials could finally ensure that all the two motors at Gangaram, Bheem Ghanpur, Pulukurthi and Dharmasagar were in place to put in place uninterrupted pumping of water as planned.

The surging waters in Dharmasagar tank not only brought cheers to farmers, but also to residents of Kazipet, Hanamkonda and Warangal.

The lifeline

Dharmasgar tank, the lifeline of people, is always full either due to rain or drawal of water from Lower Manair Dam in Karimnagar district through Kakatiya Canal. With the tank receiving enough water from GLIS, now the residents can be assured of drinking water supplies even during peak summer as the Warangal Municipal Corporation has drawn plans to augment drinking water supplies by laying a pipeline from Dharmasagar tank to filter beds at Waddepally.
