Dial 108 for emergency response service

TIRUCHI: A free 24x7 Emergency Response Service, a joint initiative of the State government and the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), was launched here on Saturday.
A fleet of 12 ambulances would be deployed, which could be accessed by dialling the toll-free number 108. The number could be accessed from both landline and mobile phones. Residents could avail the service for medical emergencies, road and fire accidents and incidents of crime.
The service has been launched under a Memorandum of Understanding with the EMRI, a non-profit organisation, founded by B.Ramalinga Raju, Chairman, Satyam Computers.
Health Minister M.R.K.Paneerselvam said the victims would be transported free of cost to the nearest hospital of their choice. The State government has sanctioned Rs.36 crores for implementing the project. Health Secretary V.K.Subburaj said the service has already been launched in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvallur, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruvarur. Collector T.Soundiah said three ambulances would be stationed in Tiruchi City and the rest would be stationed in the rural parts/taluk headquarters.
Transport and Agriculture Minister K.N.Nehru, L.Ganesan, MP, Anbil Periasamy and M.Rajasekaran, MLAs, and Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman were present.
