Metro Rail to cover new Secretariat too

S. Vydhianathan

CHENNAI: The alignment of the first corridor of the Chennai Metro Rail is to be modified slightly to accommodate the new Secretariat complex, coming up on the Government Estate on the Anna Salai opposite the Periyar statue.

The present alignment is from Washermenpet to Chennai Airport via Broadway (Prakasam Road), Chennai Central Station, Ripon Building along the Cooum river, Tarapore Towers, Spencers, Gemini, Anna Salai, Saidapet, and Guindy.

In the modified alignment, after Ripon building, the course will touch Chintadripet, EVR Statue, new Secretariat building, Anna Statue, Shanthi Theatre and Tarapore Towers.

According to a Metro Rail Company official, the inclusion of the new Secretariat complex is necessitated as hundreds of people will be visiting the Secretariat every day .

For them, the present Chintadripet station in the Mass Rapid Transit System and the Secretariat complex (underground station) in Metro Rail would be ideal stations.

Meanwhile, the company is in the process of appointing a general consultant for the project. In the process, it is being assisted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The official said work was going on at a fast pace and once the project was cleared by the Central Cabinet, physical work would begin.
