14 cases filed for defacing walls

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: The police have registered 14 cases against various political parties for defacing walls in Tirumangalam where by-election is scheduled for January 9.

Following complaints, the police booked six cases against the DMK, two cases each against Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam, AIADMK, MDMK and the Samuga Needhi Katchi.

Though 70 locations had been identified as sensitive, adequate police presence would be in place till the polling day, a senior police officer said and added that all the 11 police stations coming under the jurisdiction of Tirumangalam Assembly constituency had adequate police personnel. There are no vacancies in any of the stations and the seven sub-divisions had been provided each with a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

After the Dravida Murpokku Desiya Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate received ‘threats,’ the police provided him with personal security officer. “All the 17 candidates who had filed nominations till Friday had been given police security,” he said.

Apart from the local police, two companies of special police, which account for about 120 personnel, had been deployed on poll duty. Similarly, many of the sub-inspectors, who had served in stations in Tirumangalam area in the past, had also been drawn.

During a recent review meeting of the law and order situation, senior officers had directed the respective station house officers to ensure that all ‘wanted’ criminals were secured.
