The pathetic conditions of roads as mentioned by R. Ramesh (The Hindu, November 8) has to be set right to conform to the government’s plans of all round development of the town. Our work in the SVU’s PG centre at Kadapa (Vemana University) in 1990s indicated that the soft shales occurring in the town produce swelling and collapsible type soils that reduce life span of roads. A quick effective way to repair roads in such terrains at low cost consists in the use of a synthetic compound developed in South Africa (known as CBR Plus in North America) to make clay minerals water repellent and stabilise road surface. The government’s decision to set up special police cells is a welcome move. This will offer immediate help to many girl students, women and children with regard to harassment and abuse.
