dated December 22, 1958: Economic progress

Pandit Pant, Union Home Minister, addressing a public meeting in Madras on December 21, under the auspices of the Tamil Nad Congress Committee, called for “a moratorium for the time being” on all controversies “which divert our attention from the central pivotal objective” of achieving economic and cultural progress of the great nation. Regardless of all differences – social, economic or religious – they should concentrate on this objective for some years to come, he said. He said Madras had been the fountainhead of great currents of thought which left a rich heritage for the country. It continued to be the “intellectual lighthouse” of India, he said.
