On playing cricket

The cancellation of the Indian cricket team’s tour to Pakistan was expected. With the memory of the Mumbai attacks still fresh in our minds, how can we send our team to a country whose nationals were responsible for the bloodbath? We cannot imperil the lives of our players.

R. Sampath,

Chennai

Although the people of Pakistan and India want their teams to play cricket, the Indian government is left with no choice other than cancelling the tour. There is no guarantee that the Pakistan government can provide adequate safety to our players. In this charged atmosphere of public anger against the Mumbai outrage, putting cricket behind is a good decision. In fact, the government should sever all bilateral ties with Pakistan till it hands over the 20 dreaded criminals on our most wanted list.

V. Pandy,

Tuticorin

The simmering tension between the two countries is increasing with every passing day. Yet the government’s decision to cancel the cricket tour has shattered the dreams of cricket enthusiasts. More than security, bringing more pressure on Pakistan to act against terror appears to be the motive behind the cancellation.

As a matter of fact, no place in the world can be said to be absolutely safe today.

Syed Salman Ghani,

Patna
