Condemnable

Minority Affairs Minister A.R. Antulay’s remark that there is more to it than meets the eye to the killing of ATS chief Hemant Karkare and his colleagues during the Mumbai attacks is yet another instance of a leader talking through the hat.

That the irresponsible comment has come when the whole country is displaying enviable fortitude is indeed unfortunate. If not for anything else, the comment deserves condemnation for its timing.

When the Pakistan government is trying hard to extricate itself from the charge that the Mumbai attackers belonged to its country, Mr. Antulay has linked the killing of the ATS chief with the Malegaon blast investigations. In the process, he has unwittingly played into the hands of the Pakistani authorities.

By raising absurd questions, Mr. Antulay has discredited all those who want to ask genuine questions about the police and the way they function. A free society is one that questions the official version. But when an influential person like Mr. Antulay reduces the process of genuine inquiry to political grandstanding, he makes it difficult for anyone to ask questions that need to be asked.

Freedom of expression is a democratic privilege. But its casual use has now become common. Mr Antulay has flouted the unwritten rule of political responsibility and sensitivity. Making sensitive claims without concrete evidence is a dangerous political exercise.
