Letters to the Editor
The Income Tax department has informed taxpayers through email that the tax credit will be limited to the statement generated by the department on the basis of the information uploaded by banks. This is absolutely irrational. The tax credit, according to the statement the department has attached to the email, covers not even 30 per cent of the amount deducted from the individual. A taxpayer claims tax credit on the basis of TDS certificates issued by the persons or companies which deduct tax. The certificates contain the PAN number of the individual, the date of payment, total tax deducted, etc. The Income Tax department now says that in case of missing entries in their statement, the individuals should find out whether the individuals and banks have filed the returns and ensure that the PAN number has been given correctly. This is nothing but sheer harassment of taxpayers who cannot go beyond getting TDS certificates and attaching them to their returns. K. Raghunathan, Chennai
