This Day That Age
Mr. G.B. Pant, Union Home Minister, speaking on the occasion of Rajaji’s 80th birthday celebrations at the Rasika Ranjani Sabha, Mylapore, Madras, on December 22, said that Rajaji’s intellectual prowess was unrivalled and his power of persuasion with the aid of suavity and mellowed wisdom, could vanquish all his critics. The crowded gathering which overflowed into the corridors and streets surrounding the Sabha repeatedly cheered the speakers as they described the unique qualities of India’s elder statesman. When Mr. Justice P.V. Rajamannar, Chief Justice, in a “common man’s analysis” as to what “Rajagopalachari” connoted, said Rajaji had been a ‘raja’, the Governor-General of India, a gopala (cowherd) as Chief Minister of Madras at a crucial juncture and an acharya, a great preceptor, loud cheers in the Hall were echoed by tumultuous applause outside.
