Over 2000 LIC employees go on strike

Off work: Krishangiri LIC office wears a deserted look as the employees went on a nation wide strike.
KRISHNAGIRI: Over 2000 employees and officers of the Life Insurance Corporation of India went on a strike in Salem division opposing the Government’s move to raise the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) cap from 26 per cent to 49 per cent on Tuesday.
Employees of the Divisional Office at Salem and 17 branches offices including Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri joined the strike and held demonstrations in front of their office buildings raising slogans against the Union Government, said N. Gopinathan, Joint Secretary of the National Federation of Insurance Field Workers of India (NFIFWI). The strike was spearheaded by the All India Insurance Employees Association (AIIEA) and Class 1 LIC officers association.
Employees urged the Union Government to withdraw the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill in Rajya Sabha and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Amenment) Bill in Lok Sabha passed on Monday.
In Krishnagiri, 50 employees participated in the demonstration on Tuesday. About 60 employees who work at Krishnagiri main LIC office staged a demonstration wearing black flags. Mr. Gopinathan led the demonstration. Branch President K. Rajamanickam, Secretary R. Subramaniyan addressed other employees.
The protesters also lit candles before the LIC office building on Monday evening.
In Dharmapuri, NFIFWI Joint Secretary A. Jayabalan, and Branch Secretary S. Sudhakaran presided over the demonstration outside LIC main offfice. About 65 employees participated in the protest. Mr. Gopinathan told The Hindu that the decision on the course of action would be taken by their national unit at Delhi.
