Encouraging: Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar distributing the prize to a winner in the sports events held as part of the World Disabled Day in Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar on Tuesday appealed to private sector companies to provide job opportunities to persons with disabilities. “Liberalisation is now transferring more responsibility to the private sector companies. The software and other allied industries are giving more opportunities to the disabled,” he said in his address at a function to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons organised by the Social Welfare Department. Appealing to the Social Department to keep track of latest developments in the field of Information Technology, he said they should explore all options to provide job opportunities. “The expanding IT field has created a new breed of disabled professionals, who are, on the one hand, not subjected to any disadvantage and on the other hand have their quest to be financially independent by putting their natural skills to the best effect,” he added. He distributed awards and prizes to winners in various competitions. Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam said that within two months the government would complete the survey to identify eligible candidates to provide three per cent reservation for physically challenged persons in government jobs. Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy was present on the occasion.
