Additional sub-court soon

Tirupur: The court complex in the city is all set to have an additional subordinate court before Pongal, taking the total number of subordinate judges to two. A.S. Shanmugasundaram, president, Tirupur Bar Association, told The Hindu that the appointment of one more subordinate judge would significantly ease the workload on the existing judge considering that the backlog of cases at the only sub-court here now was about 6,000.
“Besides, about 1,000 fresh cases are coming up before the subordinate judge here every year,” he added. At present, the complex houses two judicial magistrate courts, a munsif court, and two fast track courts apart from the single sub-court.
The subordinate judges deal with land acquisition original petitions, insolvency proceedings, cases pertaining to money claims in the range of Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh, appeals arising from munsif court, and divorce cases, among others.
The additional subordinate court will function from a makeshift location identified inside the existing complex for the time being till a new edifice was constructed on an adjacent plot.
Mr. Shanmugasundaram said that Tirupur Bar Association plans to raise funds for the construction of the proposed building.
A few days ago, Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra, a judge of Madras High Court, inspected the arrangements being made at the stopgap locality for the additional sub-court.
