Traders’ plea against market cess for processed items
Special Correspondent
KUMBAKONAM: Tamil Nadu Varthakar Nala Kazhagam, Kumbakonam and Tamil Nadu Unavu Porul Viyabarigal Sangam, Madurai, have appealed to the State Government to bring changes in the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Produce Sales (Regulation) Act 1987.
A resolution adopted at a State level conference of traders organised by the associations at Kumbakonam on Sunday said that market cess should be collected in the regulated market for the produce cultivated in the area surrounding that market.
Cess should not be collected for processed products. All facilities should be given for traders in the regulated market. Cess should be collected only after a committee of traders and farmers certified that the market could be used. Government should discuss the changes suggested by the traders. Permit system should be removed immediately. A district should be formed with Kumbakonam as its headquarters.
