Plea for memorial to Nanje Gowda
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: The Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha led by Vatal Nagaraj has appealed to the State Government to build a memorial in honour of the former Minister H.N. Nanje Gowda, who passed away recently.
Speaking at a condolence meeting organised here on Tuesday, Mr. Nagaraj said a representation would be submitted to the State Government by a committee comprising Nanje Gowda’s friends and admirers.
He said the committee would comprise the retired judge Ko. Channabasappa, the former MLA Puttadas and the former MLC Mune Gowda, besides himself.
Mr. Mune Gowda said the State Government should name a prominent reservoir or a canal after Nanje Gowda.
Mr. Channabasappa, however, did not favour either putting up a statue of Nanje Gowda or naming a road after him and said, “His soul will rest in peace only when the irrigation problems of the State are appropriately tackled.”
Mr. Puttadas sought to justify the irrigation expert changing parties. “He had to do it as he felt he would be able to redress the grievances of the public only by quitting the party, which was not responding to the people’s problems,” he said.
