Thiruvananthapuram: All-India president of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha Thampan Thomas has deplored the alleged sale of rice sanctioned by the Centre for providing noon meal to schoolchildren. Inaugurating a dharna organised by the School Pachaka Thozhilali Sangatana before the DPI office here on Tuesday he dubbed it an injustice to poor students. He lamented that workers engaged in cooking noon meals were paid just Rs.50 even though the minimum daily wage under the Employment Guarantee Scheme had been raised to Rs.125.He wanted the government to ensure job security of these workers who had been engaged in cooking noon meals for the last 25 years. They should also be paid a minimum wage of Rs.125. The workers organised an agitation before the Labour Minister’s official residence demanding an assurance that they would not lose jobs because of the common kitchen scheme to be introduced next year.
